Assessments by a Personal Trainer

health and fitness programmes

An OHSA or orthopedic screening assessment (OHSA) is the first step in a personal coach's evaluation of a client. The SSA is a test of a client’s balance, range, motion, stability and coordination. The OHSA and SSA are performed from a standing position. The SSA will reveal the client's balance, coordination and any other medical limitations. A SSA or a physical exam should be completed before a training session starts. It should also be done during the session. The trainer will be able to assess the client's physical and mental health. This will help ensure that the client continues with the program.

Depending upon the client's fitness level, the PT assessment could include multiple components. A part of the assessment process is the interview. It is crucial to discuss the client’s goals and objectives. A basic test may be sufficient for some clients. Another personal trainer assessment will include a physical activity readiness survey that will disclose the client’s medical history, limitations, and other pertinent information. This questionnaire is necessary to assess if a client can exercise.

An HT assessment will provide detailed information about the client's current condition. A personal trainer can design a tailored fitness program by using either a HT/FMS. The HT and FT tests are useful to determine the amount of work a client can complete. A HT can also be a good way to check the client's strength and fitness levels. A PT should be able adjust the training session if it can see that a client's performance is improving.

In a HT, a client will warm up before the assessment. The client will then be asked for a step-up-and down test with the other foot. They will then be supervised for one minute. THT requires that the client maintains proper form throughout the test. A client who fails to maintain proper form may have instability issues or overactive muscles.

Another HT would be a great candidate for a girth measurement. This type HT uses biometric tests to measure the client's muscles, fat, and body. The HIIT tests can also be used for measuring the student’s body composition. HIIT testing is a great way to measure a person’s fitness. These tests will also show a person’s overall health.

What is the difference between Aerobic Fitness and Anaerobic Fitness?

Anaerobic fitness refers to the ability of our bodies to perform intense physical work without oxygen. Anaerobic pathways can be used to supply enough energy during high-intensity exercise. Anaerobic pathways include glycolysis, creatine phosphate, the phosphagen, lactic acid, etc.

In contrast, aerobic fitness refers to sustaining continuous low-intensity exercise. When doing aerobic exercises, oxygen serves as the primary source for fuel for the cells. In other terms, the aerobic pathway has more energy that the anaerobic.

You need to build up your aerobic capability if you plan on running a marathon. If you only focus on building up your anaerobic capacity, you won't be able to finish the race.

Aerobic fitness is also referred to as cardiovascular fitness. Step tests and VO2 max testing are the most popular methods to measure cardiovascular fitness.

Test VO2 Max

VO2 max is the maximal amount of oxygen (O2) that the body uses during exercise. This test determines how much O2 your body can use during exercise.

This test measures cardiovascular fitness in a way that is most accurate. It requires expensive equipment and highly-trained professionals to administer.

Step Tests

Step tests are a simple but effective way to measure cardiovascular fitness. These are based on your weight and age, they require you to run or walk on a track.

These tests cost little, are quick and simple to do, and can be carried out almost anywhere. For example, you could walk on a treadmill 20 minutes and then stop. Throughout the session, your heart rate should be within a certain range.

This method is known as the "Bruce Protocol". Bruce himself was a runner who developed this protocol after he realized that his heart rate would not increase when he ran longer distances.
